Frequently asked questions

Q. What is a Doula?

A. The word in and of itself describes so much of what a Doula is. “Doula” comes from the Greek word “Doule” meaning “female servant.” A Doula serves the mother or mother-to-be by providing informational, emotional and physical support.

Q. Why do I need a Doula for support if I have my Partner?

A. A Doula is never meant to take the place of a partner. While I know much about birth, I will never know as much about a pregnant mama as her partner. It is so important to create a birth team that can support mama in every way. While the partner can provide so much love and support, I am trained in how to guide a mother through the struggles and fears of pregnancy, the intensity of labor and the beginnings of motherhood and breastfeeding.

Q. What is the difference between a Doula and a Midwife?

A. A Midwife is trained medically to care for both mama and baby through the birth of baby. She will check in throughout labor and keep track of the vitals and well being of baby and mama. A Doula is trained more specifically in coping with the struggles of labor through the use of massage, rebozo, essential oils, counter pressure and so much more. Once your Doula joins you in labor, she provides continuous support to guide you through the pain and intensity of childbirth.

Q. I have a high pain tolerance, do I need a Doula?

A. I would never say any woman “needs” a Doula. I believe every woman has the strength inside of her to complete her Birth Journey. However, the pain of labor is different than any other. It is very difficult to prepare for and there can be moments of panic during labor due to the intensity. I do not believe that pain tolerance is what makes a labor “easy.” I believe that full support and the correct mind-set as well as being educated on the birth process is what makes labor feel empowering vs scary.
